As The Great Bear Folk Theatre, we perform story theatre. As head of the children's theatre program at BYU-I for 20 years, Omar led, and taught his students how to transform classic folk and fairytales into theatre pieces. Lori has served as the primary director for the program. We have both taught storytelling at the college level. As a tandem storytelling duo, we have been to multiple festivals, conferences, library districts, etc. across the country. Some of the places we've been include The National Storytelling Festival, as exchange place tellers, Timpanogos Storytelling festival, Forest Storytelling festival, Weber State Univ. Storytelling festival, Cache Valley Storytelling festival, Donna Reed Festival,, the National Storytelling Conference, the Henderson NV lib, dist, and several heritage and Scottish festivals. We've led workshops, done school visits, etc.
Omar has his PhD in playwriting, and recently retired from the BYU-I theatre department, where he taught playwriting, theatre history, children's theatre, storytelling, and acting. He is a member of AEA and SAG, with professional theatre and TV credits. He writes many of the songs in their performances. Lori has a BA in Theatre Education, and was the primary director for their children's theatre program at the college, as well as directed numerous theatre productions with children. She also tells singly, and has toured her one-woman storytelling show "Becoming An Honorary Crone" to gre

Tandem teliing is a joy for us. It allows us to travel together doing what we love to do. We love telling classic folktales with our own unique comic twist to them. Omar writes most of our tandem stories, as well as most of our music. His characters are crazy, outlandish, and very lovable. Lori usually holds down the fort as the straight man in our tandem tales. She also loves telling her own stories, gleaned from her childhood, her life as the mother of 5, and humanity in general. She loves sharing healing stories, those tales we connect to and feel more whole for having heard them. She also loves folktales that feature strong female characters, women who can slay their own dragons. We do school visits, workshops, and love working with our hosts to develop a program that focuses on their specific requests.
We have prepared story programs to choose from, such as Celtic Tales, stories and songsnof those enchanted lands; Americana, with classic American heroes and music,Candlelight Hauntings, ghost stories to warm your heart and chill your bones, and a Holiday medley, stories and songs of the Christmas season. We can also work with you to put together a program focusing on a theme of your choice.
Our workshops include Beginning Storytelling, Gathering Memories, Story Theatre, Mask Making, and Tandem Telling. All of these can be a simple workshop,up to a residency of several days.
Let us work with you to create the show and story education you are looking for.

Types of stories I tell:

We tell classic folktales in tandem-style, filled with zany characters, mixed-up history, and lots of laughter. We use folk music, and our own songs, to enhance the stories we perform. Lori tells singly, both folktales as well as personal stories of humor, healing, and wisdom, and particularly loves stories that feature wise, strong female characters. Omar tells personal stories as well, either in song, or in tales accentuated with his own music. He is an accomplished playwrite as well.
