Beyond the Chalkboard: Connecting with Youth
YES! (Youth, Educators, and Storytellers Alliance) SIG Pre-Conference
Pittsburgh, PA
Thursday, July 20, 2006
Walk away from your chalkboard and your computer! Join us as we celebrate storytelling with and for our youth. Curriculum-based storytelling has become a buzzword: let’s ensure that it becomes a standard for educators and youth alike. Along a two-track workshop system, participants can center on the classroom through the eyes of educators/performers or empower youth who need caring coaches/mentors to walk the storytelling path.
After lunch, our same presenters transform their words into practical application with our honored guests: youth! See the room represent a classroom or a safe coaching environment for kids. Workshop participants have the choice to experiment or observe the process in action.
Our Keynote, Kendall Haven, has received awards for 20 books and has performed for over 3 million people in 42 states. He’ll share storytelling secrets for the classroom and will undoubtedly receive an A+ in meeting curriculum standards.
Presenter Kathy Palermo feels that many teachers use stories without realizing it. She will promote effective stories with purpose. Sherry Norfolk will demonstrate how children can have “whole brain” experiences through the images and logic of stories.
Mentor kids and allow them to “catch the story bug” with clubs or other organizations through Karen Chace. Nurture family stories as Carrie Sue Ayvar, a third-generation storyteller, will show how to develop storytelling traditions in your family living room that can translate to the stage.
