The Video Room

In Rick Sebak’s documentary film, America’s Favorite Neighbor, Fred Rogers, the television performer, speaks of the space between himself and the viewer as holy ground. As oral storytellers we are aware of  the space between us and the audience. If we have told stories over a period of years, we know how to communicate across this space in live performance. Few of us have had the opportunity to explore the holy ground that Mr. Rogers worked with art and craftsmanship for over nine hundred shows. The Video Room will attempt to present a variety of video experiences that explore Mr. Rogers’ holy ground.

The films presented will represent a variety of formats: dramatic features, documentaries, storytelling performances and combinations of these different formats. Films may be excerpted to focus the discussion on a particular idea or part of the storytelling community. The documentary work of our keynote speaker, Rick Sebak, will be featured along with the work of others in the storytelling community who have explored what storytelling is and how we can communicate in this medium.

We hope the Video Room will stimulate new visions of what storytelling is and how it can be presented to the larger audience of film and television viewers. We hope it will provide a place at the conference where people with interests in film and video can gather and share their ideas.
