Cortes Island,
Cortes Island,
Canada. Storytelling:
Breathing Life into
Our Stories. Friday
evening through
Wednesday noon.
Telling stories is
as natural and vital
as taking a breath!
This workshop
invites you to:
discover your innate
capacity as a
storyteller, draw on personal and
cultural images and
memories in
shaping narrative,
cultivate and enjoy
the delicious, deep
bond that forms
between teller and
listener
celebrate the power of storytelling to enrich your life
professionally,
artistically and
spiritually.
Connie's approach
is practical and
hands-on. Her
teachings can be
used in the
corporate world, for
social justice,
healing and
enriching family
lives. Uncover a
fresh perspective in
re-visiting and
re-imagining your
triumphs, losses,
regrets and joy, by
using intuition,
humor and the five
senses. Connie
creates a community
of appreciation;
learning
storytelling through
oral exercises,
movement activities,
story-partnering and
companion listening.
This workshop
welcomes deep
listening and
telling. It offers a
receptive setting to
call up the stories
and the archetypes
that shape our lives
and our world in an
encouraging,
compassionate and
playful atmosphere.
Our memories –
cultural and
personal - often go
unexplored and
undeveloped. By
focusing our
attention, we can
draw on that
wellspring of images
and stories. And by
telling and
listening, we come
to know the
universal language
that encompasses all
of human experience.
Our time together
will be a practice
in nurturing
spontaneity and
creativity.

Ireland
THE 14th CAPE CLEAR INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP Saturday, October 27 through Monday, October 29, 2007 MASTER STORYTELLER IN RESIDENCE: Jan Blake, England: Born in Manchester of Jamaican parentage, warm, witty, dramatic, inspirational, a renowned storyteller around the world, Jan has taught workshops all over Europe. Her children’s book, Give Me My Yam, is in its 8th reprint. With close links to such places as The Royal National Theatre, The London National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Concert Hall of Ireland, and specialising in West African and Caribbean folktales, she is committed to passing on those skills that help storytellers develop their individual expertise.
“Character Development & Balance” WORKSHOP: Since a storyteller should to be able to deal with the full gamut of human emotion, and also needs to be able to give his or her audience permission to be totally human, we need, Jan believes, to look at development of character in our stories. In her stories, she’s learned, what people particularly seem to notice is that her relationship with her characters is what brings the stories to life. Stories, she suggests, hold a mirror up to other people – and the tales reflect back to us the human condition, reflect back on our being fully human. Consequently, she asks that all participants bring a story to the workshop in which there’s a battle between good and evil. We are, she’s discovered, good at being the good character, but we tend to caricature the nasty ones. We need to gain balance; we need to learn how to present the dark side, the shadow side, the evil side as fully as we present the good. Not that our stories need to be heavy, but that a struggle should go on. So, as storytellers, how do we break life up into characters, both good and bad, the full range, and gain balance? Come find out.
INSTRUCTION TIME: c. 15 hours instruction. Sessions start Sat. promptly at 10:00, end at 1:00, begin again at 2:00, end at 5:00. That evening: optional stories from c. 9:00 - 11:00. On Sun. the same schedule will be followed, but then there will be a dinner in an island restaurant or home from c. 6:30 – 10:00 (at own expense). On Monday instruction time runs from 9:00 - 12:00 (the last boat on Mon. departs at 1:00pm for those who must leave early), & then there will be an optional afternoon storytelling walk from 2:30 - 6:00, led by Chuck. The next departing ferry leaves for Baltimore at 9:00am on Tues. The island pubs are full of fun every night.
Open to all but limited to the first 14 (2 places left as of 14 March 2007). A fun yet heuristic opportunity for aspiring storytellers, practicing storytellers, teachers of all levels & ages, librarians, social workers, politicians, actors, priests, publicans.
COST: €150 for course plus a non-refundable €20 registration fee (limited scholarship available); accommodation (room & full board) varies with place of residence. Self-catering facilities, hostel, B&B, camping. Lunches Sat. & Sun. are served at cost in The Bullig House (Euro 6.00 each) and a special banquet for all held Sunday night will also be extra, price (and location) yet to be determined.
Ferry: Take the Naomh Ciarán II from Baltimore at 11:00 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 26. We’ll welcome & orient you at the pier. Leave Tuesday morning on 9:00am boat (or on 1:00 p.m. special ferry Mon. afternoon if you must be at work early Tues. morning).
